Apply for a Lorenzo Award.

1. The Lorenzo Award is granted by the Lorenzo Foundation, established by Lorenzo and Rebecca Brucia in 2024, to recognize the passions of performing artists and to support students in expanding their knowledge of the humanities.

2. Over three generations of the Brucia family have participated in and supported the arts. Giuseppe Brucia in 1922 pioneered the establishment of the San Francisco Opera with a generous donation to bring the opera to the people of San Francisco. Joseph and Frances Brucia continued the family legacy by funding the first simulcast of a San Francisco opera, seen by over 8,000 people in the San Francisco Civic Center Plaza in 2006.

3. The Lorenzo Award encourages artists to dream of performing in new and innovative ways.

4. The performing arts include electronic and non-electronic instruments, singing of any kind, and one-person shows including comedy, dancing, pantomime and individual expressions.

5. There are no age, race, religious or gender limitations.

6. Each applicant must submit the Lorenzo Award application in full by December 31 of each year. The Selection Committee reviews every application, and applicants who are chosen are contacted and invited to an interview.

7. You may include letters of recommendation with your application. They are not required, but they help the Selection Committee learn more about you.

8. The Lorenzo Award winner or winners are selected and announced by February 4 of each year. All applicants are notified of the decision.

9. Lorenzo Awards are granted up to $10,000 depending on the artist and their specific needs. 60% of the award is granted at the annual event after the winners perform. The remaining 40% is granted upon their return to the following year's annual event.

10. Each year the Lorenzo Foundation holds an event where the previous year's winners perform and the current year's winners are announced and also perform. It is a cocktail and dinner event.

11. Each Lorenzo Award winner is required to attend this event. The previous year's winners talk about their year, their goals and challenges, and perform their specific art. The new winners are asked to talk about their goals for the coming year and to perform their art.

12. Lorenzo Award grants support the passions of performing artists and encourage students to learn more about the humanities. The grants are to be used in the pursuit of those passions. In the case of tuition, the Lorenzo Awards pay the school directly, as identified by the winner.

13. The Selection Committee intends to be open to all forms of the performing arts, as described in item 4. The committee recommends the following to all applicants:

    • Be clear in the application about your artistic passion.
    • State your goals simply.
    • If you are selected for an interview, keep focused on your specific art form.
    • Provide visuals of your art form. A link to a performance video can be included in your application; please do not send recordings on thumb drives or other media.
    • Give the Selection Committee confidence that you are dedicated to your art form and will spend the coming years developing and improving your artistic goals.
